ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION BRANCH POPPY FUND

Charitable Giving

Curator's Note

We all know that giving helps others but studies have shown that it can actually boost your physical and mental health. In fact, studies have reported lower blood pressure, reduced stress levels and a surge in our feel-good neurotransmitters when we give of ourselves to others. I guess there’s some scientific proof behind “the joy of giving."

ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION BRANCH POPPY FUND
CALGARY, Alberta, Canada

Details

The Poppy Fund was initially established to assist Veterans of the Military Forces from World War I and continued through World War II, the Korean conflict and continues to this day in assisting Military Veterans that are in need. Although the needs of the members of the World Wars are lessening, the need to support members from the Regular Forces has increased dramatically. With conflicts still taking place throughout the world the need for this assistance will continue and in all probability increase. Due to the many stress related illnesses that are now much more prevalent with the returning members, the costs to assist have increased as well. Primarily our support is given in the following areas: Aids to daily living accessories such as canes, crutches, walkers, wheel chairs, electric scooters, electric wheelchairs and bathroom accessories for Veterans use. Medical assistance for Respiratory Illnesses, Chiropractic needs, Dental, Eyecare, Hearing Aids, Lifeline and Prescriptions. Residential needs including Home Maintenance and Repairs, Furnishings, Insurance, Utilities, Rents and Clothing Supplies are also covered. Our extensive Food Bank provides Hampers and Food Vouchers as well. We will continue to provide assistance and will also promote remembrance of the sacrifices that our members of the Military have made.
