Founded in 2006, Rainbow Railroad is a volunteer-based Canadian charity with a mission to help persecuted LGBTQ individuals get to safety. We carry out this mission through two programs - Emergency Travel Support and a pilot project on Private Sponsorship.
We work with local organizations in countries where state-sponsored homophobia exists to identify and verify cases of LGBTQ individuals who face such severe persecution that they must leave their home country.
Through our Emergency Travel Support program, we provide individuals with information on their rights to travel to safety and claim asylum and provide information and resources to help individuals develop their own route to safety. When funding permits, we provide financial support to cover direct travel costs, and provide short-term pre-travel and post-travel financial support as individuals pursue their route to safety.
We also facilitate the Private Sponsorship of LGBTQ refugees to help them resettle to Canada. This includes referring cases to appropriate private sponsorship groups in Canada as well as a pilot project to directly sponsor five (5) LGBTQ individuals to be resettled to Canada in 2016.
